There’s a good chance you’ve been told your whole life that there are benefits in exercise. But I have to admit; I STRUGGLE with wanting to engage in an exercise program. I really dislike stationary equipment and find I get bored with these methods easily. Even a nightly walk seems boring and even daunting at times, especially when the weather is less than cooperative (Hello, HEATWAVE!).

Instead, I tend to do a lot better when I find activities I can engage in that feel more like fun and less like exercise. I’ve compiled a list of alternative exercise that I’ve found doable for me, and even sometimes FUN!

Dance

I have loved dance since I was a little girl. As I grew older, my love didn’t end but my abilities began to create a barrier to taking classes. I was often able to find adult dance classes, but it was rare that they would actually offer choreography as part of the class, which is what I really wanted.

Recently I found Steezy. Steezy offers choreography for all levels of dancers, from beginner to advanced. You can learn anything from hip hop to contemporary, ballet to popping, and even sexy dancing in heels 😉. They even have some dance workout programs! I love that most of these choreographed dances are broken down simply and you can choose if you want to mirror the instructor, or follow from behind.

Yoga

There are so many benefits to practicing yoga. One reason I appreciate it is because it offers opportunity for me to incorporate all 3 of the mind-body-spirit triad. I find that I benefit from the flexibility I get from practicing yoga, and the clarity of mind I get from being able to incorporate meditation into the movements. Yoga can easily be done at home and requires little equipment.

YogaBurn is a program that I have enjoyed exploring. I love that they have several different programs to rotate through.

The above are exercises you could easily do at home generally without any major equipment. If you prefer  to get out of the house, here are some other alternative forms of exercise:

Hiking

One thing I really enjoy about hiking is that it allows me to become grounded and connect with my soul. There’s something about being out in nature that makes me feel alive and at peace. Fortunately, I live in an area where there are TONS of trails to explore within hours or even minutes of my home. To find trails near you, https://www.hikingproject.com/ is a great resource.

Be a Mermaid!

Ok, how can you pass this one up?! I get to be a mermaid?! Yes, PLEASE! The 8-week Mermaid Transformation Series, which is a full body workout developed by USA Swimming Coach Christine Duston and can be found here: https://www.finfunmermaid.com/mermaid-workout. You can even buy a mermaid tail through the site!

Still can’t find something you want to try? Perhaps you just need a little extra motivation. How’s money as a motivator? Set goals, wager, get rewarded!

So which of these appeals to you? What are your favorite non-workout workouts! Let me know in the comments!
