So often it seems that spiritual health is overlooked as an essential health need.  But did you know there’s a strong tie between physical health, mental health, and spiritual health? Maintaining a spiritual connection is essential to whole-person health and when one suffers, the others tend to follow.

Spirituality refers to one’s personal beliefs and attitudes that are often related or contributed to a higher power. Some people find spirituality in religion, and others seek connection with nature by way of grounding and meditation. Others still seek spiritual growth through extreme sport. There are many methods people choose to connect to their higher power. These practices allow for a soul-growth and often guide us down our life-path and help establish purpose and a vision of who we are. Having time to connect spiritually is strongly tied into a person’s overall health and quality of life.  

During crisis, emphasis tends to be on physical health. We focus on safety and self-preservation from the fight/flight/fawn/freeze response. This is a very basic, primitive response and does not allow much thought about how the crisis is going to affect mind and spirit as well.

Many times we can quickly return back to a non-stress state, however, prolonged crisis does not allow us to return to baseline. We remain in a state of stress and unsurety, which does not allow focus on anything except staying alive.

It’s no wonder so many of us are struggling with life right now! COVID put many of us into a prolonged crisis mode full of anticipation and on shaky foundations. Many of us were displaced from careers and homes. We were literally just doing what we could to survive.

Although COVID is still running rampant, it’s starting to feel that there’s a return to normalcy. With that, it appears, comes the realization that we’ve lost ourselves in the process.

In combination with prolonged crisis, many places of worship and other spiritual practice were closed down due to the pandemic. It’s no wonder that we’ve struggled more over the past few years than we have in the past! To some, the foundation that provides guidance through the difficult times was completely unavailable, and we had to reconnect with spirit in other ways.

If you are someone who has been able to keep up with spiritual health practice, kudos! I’ve heard many people mention that they now struggle in this arena, or perhaps they’re adjusting their spiritual practice as a result of the crisis. And there’s nothing wrong with that! From my small perspective, I feel that the more spiritual practices that call to me that I’m able to incorporate into my daily routines, the better I feel.

I’m not going to lie. I struggle with meditation and I’m still practicing to clear my head during, but that’s what it’s all about; practice. When I’m successful, I love the way I feel after. Meditation is an excellent spiritual connection tool, which provides opportunity for emotional connection and self-love/forgiveness.
